To be rather than to seem.

To be, rather than to seem.

That idea sits at the heart of The Dark Room Studio.

Photography comes with a lot of words these days...

Editorial. Documentary. Authentic. Timeless. Light and airy. Dark and moody. Pick three words that describe you. Pick three more that describe how you want your photos to feel.

It can all get a little ridiculous.

You want great photographs. That’s a given.

And I want you to hire me. Obviously.

But whether you should probably comes down to something much simpler.

Does my work resonate with you?

Because there is what we plan for, and then there is what is.

We can plan the location, the light, the clothes, the timeline and the photographs we want to make. I believe in doing that well.

But then people show up.

And people are infinitely more interesting than a plan.

That’s where I want to leave some room.

For personalities. Relationships. Bad jokes. Good light. Weird kids. Unexpected weather. The beautiful thing we planned and the better thing we didn’t.

So look through the work.

If something in it makes you stop, if you can imagine yourself there, and if this sounds like the way you’d like to spend some time making photographs...

We should probably talk.

About Abigail

I’m Abigail, the photographer and owner behind The Dark Room Studio.

I’ve been photographing people since I first made my friends model for me when we were teens, which means I’ve spent an unreasonable amount of my life watching people become suddenly very aware of their hands.

I’m curious about people. I like getting to know them, hearing their stories, figuring out what makes them comfortable and building the kind of relationship where having me around with a camera doesn’t feel like such a big deal anymore.

I take the work seriously. Myself, considerably less so.

I’ll plan with you, give you direction as neccessary, notice the details, solve problems as they come up and probably say something inappropriate enough to make you laugh when I’m supposed to be taking the photograph.

Over the years my work has taken me through weddings, families, portraits, businesses, events and editorial work.

I’ve photographed at Vancouver Fashion Week, had work recognized by the International Photography Awards, and got a spread in Build Magazine.

Those things are nice.

But the part of this business I value most is still the people who come back. The families I get to watch change, the clients who trust me again, and the relationships that exist long after I’ve delivered the gallery.

After more than a decade, that’s still my favourite part of the job.
